Alabama Writers' Project. Photographs, 1901-1941.
Title:
Photographs, 1901-1941.
The function of the Alabama Writers' Project was to provide employment for journalists, free-lance writers, and college instructors. One of the activities performed by the project was to record images for use as illustrations. The series consists of photographs taken or acquired for use in AWP publications, most notably the Guide, Alabama Hunter, Fish are Fighters in Alabama, (the latter two were published by the Alabama Dept. of Conservation) and an unpublished work titled Alabama in Profile. The subjects include: agriculture, architecture, bridges and dams, education, churches, African Americans, industry, recreation, parks, and transportation. Almost all Alabama counties are represented in the photos but some communities are especially well-documented. These include: Eufaula, Montgomery, Mobile, Birmingham, Lee County, Sumter County, Baldwin County, and Monroe County. Photographs of colleges and universities are also prominent, including Alabama College (now the University of Montevallo), Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University), Florence State Teacher's College (now the University of North Alabama), Huntingdon College, Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University), and the University of Alabama. The series contains photos or sketches of such prominent Alabamians as Helen Keller, Julia Tutwiler, John Anthony Winston, Judge J. S. Williams, Pushmataha, Octavus Roy Cohen, William C. Gorgas, George Washington Carver, and Frederick D. Patterson. Also included are images of: Yoholo Micco, Tah-Chee, Sequoyah, Rosa Lee Duncan, Ralph Duncan, B. B. Ross, Annie Blair, Ola Titus, Hattie Thomas, Eugenia P. Smartt, J. C. (Doc) Hughes, Burnett Carter, and Chester Latham. Black Alabamians photographed include: Arthur McKimmon Brown, William L. Dawson, James Perry, George Harris, Plummie Rhett Tucker, Dora Green, and Jorena Pettway. Several well-known photographers recorded images for the Writers' Project, including W. Lincoln Highton, Arthur Rothstein, Marion Post Wolcott, Walker Evans, and Dorothea Lange.

Alabama. Dept. of Agriculture and Industries. Commissioner of Agriculture's administrative files, 1887-1989.
Title:
Commissioner of Agriculture's administrative files, 1887-1989.
The Dept. of Agriculture and Industries is directed by a commissioner, a position that was appointed by the Governor from 1883 until 1901, when the commissioner became an elected official. This series of administrative files documents the various aspects of the department's operations and duties. The early correspondence reflects the relatively small staff, which was centralized in the commissioner's office, who carried out the programs of the department. During these early years the commissioner was not only an administrator, but also an active participant in various special and routine department projects. In 1901 the commissioner became an elected official and after 1901 a portion of the correspondence deals with political activities. In 1923 the department was reorganized and the name was changed from the Dept. of Agriculture to the Dept. of Agriculture and Industries. The early files, 1888-1915, are arranged by subject. The subjects discussed in the correspondence are land registration, immigration, poultry, fertilizer, state fairs, soil surveys, registration of pure food, feed stuffs, liquor brands, crop contest applications and forms, crop reports, and corn contests. In addition to correspondence, the subject files also consist of registration forms and contest applications. One of the major correspondents is Reuben Francis Kolb, who served as Commissioner from 1886-1890 and 1911-1915. As the department grew in size and responsibilities the volume and type of correspondence changed. In the 1950s and 1960s the series includes correspondence from the assistant commissioner and administrative assistants. Later files from the 1980s include much information concerning other agricultural related institutions and associations such as the USDA, Alabama Farm Bureau Federation, Alabama Poultry and Egg Association, Auburn University, Soil and Water Conservation Service, the National Association of State Depts. of Agriculture (NASDA) and Women Involved in Farm Economics (WIFE). Albert MacDonald served as Commissioner of Agriculture through much of the 1980s.

Title:
Leroy S. Boyd papers, 1806-1936 (bulk 1876-1936).
Papers consist of correspondence, genealogical materials, photographs, printed items, and manuscript volumes. They reflect the political environment in Louisiana at the time, along with Boyd's political views as a Republican. Additionally, papers show his interest in history, particularly in the early history of Virginia. Correspondence comprises the majority of the collection and includes letters from political figures and public lecturers that were apparently written in response to Boyd's letters and comments on their policies, ideas, and actions. Other correspondence relates to matters concerning the Kappa Alpha Fraternity, Knights of Pythias, and Auburn University alumni. Additional Kappa Alpha Fraternity material pertains to the origin of the fraternity. Letters written in reply to Leroy Boyd's request for information regarding his father, LSU President David Boyd, General Sherman, and the Louisiana State Seminary are also present. Manuscript volumes include a postcard album, class notebooks, and scrapbooks (45 vols., 1927-1933). The album includes several downtown Baton Rouge buildings, streets and sights, including the National Cemetery, train depot, old LSU campus, St. Joseph Catholic Church, and Third Street. The scrapbooks were kept by Boyd during his tenure as I.C.C. librarian in Washington, D.C. They contain clippings about current and historical events and sights and social activities in Washington. Of note is scrapbook 42 (1932) containing clippings relating to the bicentennial celebration of George Washington's birth. Photographic materials (1892-1934) include glass plate negatives, mounted photographs, photographic postcards, cabinet cards, and snapshots of family members, cadets at Auburn, buildings and professors from Union University (Tenn.), and officials in Washington.

Wheeler family. Papers, 1809-1943.
Title:
Papers, 1809-1943.
Papers, 1809-1943, that belonged to General Joseph Wheeler consist of genealogical and biographical material, letters and correspondence, financial and business records, legal notes, military reports, speeches, printed material, maps, scrapbooks, and photographs. Additionally, the family subgroups contain a wide variety of papers, including letters, invoices, receipts, account books, legal instruments, real property documents, work contracts, and other material that testify to the family's business and legal activities. The collection documents primarily the public service career of Joseph Wheeler (1836-1906) as a Confederate and, later, as a U.S. general, and, more fully, his almost-two decades as a U.S. Representative from Ala. The bulk of political papers are letters, telegrams, and postcards sent to him in Washington. Unfortunately, Wheeler did not regularly keep records of his responses until the late 1890s, and then only during the months he was on active duty. Within the Political/Post-political series of the Joseph Wheeler subgroup, the letters and correspondence cover such topics as patronage, a variety of U.S. Postal Service issues, military appropriations, claims and pension settlements, the development of Muscle Shoals on the Tennessee River, Alabama politics, the free silver issue, and the Spanish-American and Civil wars, on which he wrote extensively. Other topics include tariff issues, elections, education, and African American soldiers' claims. The Joseph Wheeler papers also include letters and correspondence on personal and family matters as well as financial, business, and legal topics, the latter being generated by the extensive and complicated Wheeler real property lawsuits.

Alabama. Legislature. Commission to Preserve the Peace. Records, 1962-1975.
Title:
Records, 1962-1975.
The function of this legislative commission was monitoring threats to the state of Alabama's existing social structure. The two activities used to accomplish this function were investigating subversive groups or individuals, and reporting the results of these investigations. This series consists of the administrative, reference, and financial records of the Commission to Preserve the Peace. It contains correspondence, speeches, reports, minutes, vouchers, ledgers, magazines, newspapers, pamphlets, and newspaper clippings. These records represent the agency's attempts to investigate the various Civil Rights groups, and individuals who supported these groups or promoted "liberal" ideas that ran counter to the conservative viewpoint, and who might pose a threat to the racial and societal structures that existed in Alabama in the 1960s. The commission also kept an eye on activities that occurred on all of the college and university campuses throughout Alabama. Mobile, Selma, Birmingham, Montgomery, Lowndes County, and Macon County are mentioned frequently as locations of active civil rights groups. The commission investigated the following subjects and organizations, to name a few: American Civil Liberties Union, American Friends Service Committee, Black Panther Party, Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions, communism, drugs, Fellowship of Reconciliation, hippies, Institute of Pacific Relations, League for Industrial Democracy, Muslims, Southern Conference Education Fund, National Lawyers Guild, Office of Economic Opportunity, Spartacist League, Students for a Democratic Society, Southern Student Organizing Committee, Student Nonviolent Coodinating Committee, Alabama Council on Human Relations, Southern Regional Council, Inc., Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the Southern Poverty Law Center. In addition, the agency also investigated the following publications: Ramparts, People's World, Daily World, The Militant, The Southern Patriot, and Focus. Most of the correspondence is addressed to or was generated by the commission's chairman, John Hawkins, Staff Director Edwin Strickland, Research Director J. Dean Fleming, or the commission's secretary, Mavis Hicks. Some of the individuals who are the subject of correspondence and reference file material are: J. Edgar Hoover, Martin Luther King, Jr., Ralph Abernathy, Angela Davis, Lyndon B. Johnson, Karl Prussian, and Edward Davis. Major correspondents include: Dan Smoot, Paul Harvey, John R. Rarick, Billy James Hargis, Leighton L. Baker, John Stennis, Opal Tanner White, J. Walter Yeagley, Donald I. Sweany, Jr., Strom Thurmond, Edith Kermit Roosevelt, Zilla Hinton, William L. Dickinson, Richard D. Morphew, Richard B. Cotton, J. C. Phillips, George Blomgren Dewey, George Andrews, Lister Hill, Hugh Maddox, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar C. Bundy, Alton Turner, James B. Allen, and Jere Beasley. There are also numerous memorandums and informal reports to Governors George C. Wallace, Lurleen B. Wallace, and Albert P. Brewer. Among the many organizations represented in the correspondence are Christian Crusade; Women for Constitution Government; New Yorkers for the Constitution, Inc.; John Birch Society; Indiana Patriotic Publications; American Opinion Library; International Conference of Police Associations; Bob Jones University; U.S. Congress Committee on Un-American Activities; Student Voice; Illinois Seditious Activities Investigation Commission; Conservatives, Inc.; Fraternal Order of Police; American Legion; American Security Council; Citizens' Councils of America; Conservative Viewpoint; and the Church League of America. There is considerable correspondence between Strickland and other members of the Southern Association of Investigators, especially representatives from Mississippi and Texas. Also in the records is a certificate of merit from the American Academy of Public Affairs that was awarded to the commission in 1970 for its report on the communist influence in the U.N. Included also are several letters from citizens of Rhodesia or Rhodesian sympathizers requesting reports and/or discussing segregation in Rhodesia. Strickland's personal letter to Robert Kennedy, dated 1962 October 10, in which Strickland writes that the Kennedys are leading the nation toward communism is among the general correspondence. The commission issued reports of its findings to the state legislature and the Governor. Seven formal reports were prepared and made available to the general public as well as to the legislature. "Communists in Civil Rights," "1964 Civil Rights Bill," and "National Council of Churches" were produced separately and then later reissued as part of the 1965 "biennial Report to the Alabama Legislature." The other three reports were: "Campus Unrest, " "United Nations," and an untitled report on U.S. Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas. In addition to these reports the commission issued numerous informal reports about various groups, individuals, or subjects. By the 1970s the amount of correspondence generated and received, and the number of investigative reports produced had decreased significantly. All of the 1974 correspondence is in regard to Alabama statutes governing private investigator licensing.

The Tribune editor witnesses his first game of foot ball : writes up Clemson-Auburn game from his view-point: 1915 Oct. 19 : believed Sheriff Ashley could have stopped fight had he took hold of the situation in time. / [Victor B. Cheshire].
Satirical account of Cheshire's impressions following attendance at a football game at "Beauna Vista park"; Cheshire was persuaded to attend by his friends Tom Anderson and Bill Lyon; essay describes the noise and enthusiasm of the crowd of men, women, and children, as well as the apparent violence of the game on the field; suggests that Sheriff Joe Ashley might have stopped the clash. Appended note signed by H[enry] C[ampbell] D[avis] erroneously attributes article to Robert Quillen, editor of the Fountain Inn Tribune (Greenville County, S.C.).
