A native of Camden, Alabama, Stroud served with the 8th Air Force in England in World War II. He then attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute, where he earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees in English. He taught English literature and composition at A.P.I., later Auburn University, from 1953 to 1983. He published a textbook on composition and stories and poems in several magazines. His novel, Marbles, was published in 1991.
