Ralph C. Williams, 1888-1984, served in the United States Public Health Service from 1917 to his retirement in 1952. Alabama-born and medically educated at the University of Alabama, Williams worked primarily in epidemiology with the Farm Security Administration until 1935. Afterwards he rose to the rank of chief of the Bureau of Medical Services. In 1951 Dr. Williams published "The United States Public Health Service, 1798-1950." In 1952 he assumed duties as an administrator and research coordinator at the Georgia Health Department, which he continued until 1975.

Ralph Chester Williams was born in Russell County, Alabama. In 1907 he graduated from Auburn University and entered the School of Medicine of the University of Alabama. Upon receiving his M.D. in 1910, Williams began a family practice in Alabama before joining the Alabama State Health Department. He joined the U.S. Public Health Service in 1917. In 1944 he was promoted to Assistant Surgeon General. Williams wrote The United States Public Health Service, 1798-1950, which was published in 1951, the year he retired.

Williams, a graduate of Alabama Polytechnic Institute's (now Auburn University) chemistry program in 1907, studied medicine in Mobile (Ala.) to 1910, received his medical license, and practiced privately in Madison County (Ala.) until 1914. He then joined the Alabama State Board of Health, staying until 1916. From 1917 through 1951, Williams served with the U.S. Public Health Service, and from 1951 until 1961 he administered Georgia's State Hospital and Medical Facilities Construction Act.
