Draughon became president of Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) in 1947. He guided the university through significant changes such as a building boom, financial crises, unprecedented growth, modernization of the athletic programs, upgrading of mission and name, and desegregation.

Born in Hartford, Alabama, 1899. Earned B.S. degree in 1922 and M.S. in 1929 from Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University. High school teacher and principal, 1922-1931. Taught history at A.P.I., 1931-1937, served as Executive Secretary to the board of Trustees, 1937-1944, and Director of Instruction, 1944-1947. Named Acting President of A.P.I. in 1947 and served as president from 1948 until retiring in 1965. Died in 1968.
