Hollis graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn university) in 1941 which he attended on a Sears, Roebuck agricultural scholarship. He edited the student newspaper, The Auburn Plainsman, in 1940-1941. After service with the USDA during World War II, Hollis bought and edited The Cleburne News of Heflin, Ala. In 1948 he returned to Auburn where he operated a large commercial printing firm for 29 years. Hollis served on the Auburn City Council and the Auburn Housing Authority. He was also a member of the Lions Club. He published two books, one on Auburn football, the other on the Alabama Cattleman's Association.
