Hall worked as a professor of textile engineering at Auburn University from 1965 until his retirement in 1995. In 1987 Hall, along with several other professors, sued the university, charging age discrimination relating to compensation. After settling out of court, Hall filed a complaint in 1989 with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission charging continued discrimination. Hall and several other professors sued the university again in 1990. The U.S. District Court found in favor of the appellants, as did the U.S. Court of Appeals when Auburn University appealed the judgement.
