Administrative files, 1886-1890.

The bulk of this series, two cubic feet, consists of administrative correspondence. Much of this correspondence is from consitutents. The last cubic foot consists of topics, such as the apprehension and death of the outlaw Rube Burrows, appointments, extraditions, oaths of office, pardons, petitions, rewards, and telegrams. Improvements to the State Capitol, the University of Alabama, and Thanksgiving proclamations are mentioned. Correspondents include the State Normal School (that later became the University of North Alabama), Lincoln Normal School (that later became Alabama State University), Alabama Polytechnic Institute and Agricultural and Mechanical College (that later becam Auburn University), the Alabama Hospital for the Insane, the State Militia, the Board of Inspectors of Convicts, the state penitentiary, Geological Survey of Alabama, and other state and local departments and offices.

East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama.
