Rodney T. Smith was born in Washington, D.C. on April 13, 1947 and grew up in Georgia and North Carolina. He attended the Georgia Institute of Technology and graduated from UNC Charlotte (B.A., Philosophy, 1970) and Appalachian State University (M.A., English, 1976). Smith served as a professor of English and Alumni Writer-in-Residence at Auburn University (1975-1995) and is currently the editor of Shenandoah at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va.

Among his many honors are the Emily Dickinson and John Masefield awards from the Poetry Society of America, the Carl Sandburg Award from the North Carolina Poetry Society, an NEA Fellowship in Poetry, and Alabama Governor's Award for Achievement by an Artist. Smith is the author of nineteen volumes of poetry and his has been published in numerous periodicals.
