Clark, a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity whose classmates voted him "most intellectual," graduated with BS (1898) and MS (1899) from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University). He practiced law in Montgomery, Ala. until c.1912-13 then moved to Washington, DC, where he worked with Alabama Congressman S.L. Dent, Jr., the Court of Customs Appeals, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
