East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. Backscheider graduated with a Ph. D. in eighteenth-century English Restoration literature from Purdue University. In 1992, she joined the Auburn University English Dept. as Pepperell Eminent Scholar. She has published and edited several books on Daniel Defoe and other 18th century English writers. Her biography of Defoe, published in 1989, won the British Council Prize in 1990.
