Hollis graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn university) in 1941 which he attended on a Sears, Roebuck agricultural scholarship. He edited the student newspaper, The Auburn Plainsman, in 1940-1941. After service with the USDA during World War II, Hollis bought and edited The Cleburne News of Heflin, Ala. East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama.
