East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. Bowling, a native of Calhoun County, Alabama, taught and practiced law before becoming solicitor for the fifth Alabama circuit court (1905-1920). He served as U.S. Congressman (1920-1928) and judge for the fifth Alabama circuit court (1928-1946). His son, George Randolph Bowling, graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1917.
