East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. Regional conference, sponsored by the Auburn University Student Senate, on international political and social issues. Each conference focused on a specific theme and featured 5-10 speakers at a 2-3 day conference. Around 1970, conference format changed to a series of speeches over a 2-3 month period, and broadened to include domestic issues.
