East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. Parker received his A.B. and M.A. degrees in mathematics from the University of North Carolina and his Ph. D. from Brown University. His fifty year academic career included twenty-two years as Dean of the Graduate School at Auburn University, and mathematics assignments at other institutions.
