Hannum received his engineering degrees from Pennsylvania State University. He was a member of the engineering faculty at Alabama Polytechnic Institute from 1938-1958, and was appointed Dean Emeritus in 1958. East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama.
