East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. A native of Camden, Alabama, Stroud served with the 8th Air Force in England in World War II. He then attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute, where he earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees in English. He taught English literature and composition at A.P.I., later Auburn University, from 1953 to 1983. He published a textbook on composition and stories and poems in several magazines.
