Organized by students of Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University, in 1928 as a studio band to play for the campus radio station, WAPI. The Knights played their first dance date in 1930. During the 1930s and 1940s they toured along the Gulf and Atlantic Coasts. The band has been in continual existence except for a hiatus from 1943-1946. East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama.
