Charles Eliot Norton was an American educator, scholar, translator, editor, and critic. An active social reformer and strong advocate of the arts, Norton taught at Harvard and Radcliffe College. His special interests were Classical Greek and Italian Renaissance art, and Dante. He was instrumental in preserving the legacy of the American Romantic authors.

Massachusetts editor, author, and educator.

Although poor health disqualified Charles Eliot Norton from army service during the Civil War, he was a staunch supporter of the Northern cause and wrote articles for the Atlantic Monthly promoting patriotism and service. In Jan. 1863 he was appointed editor of the New England Loyal Publication Society, whose purpose was to print broadsides intended to influence public opinion on such topics as Negro citizenship, government security, and financing the war.
