John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton, the first Baron Acton, was an English aristocrat and historian. His Catholicism influenced his early life, and he travelled throughout Western Europe and the United States. He had a brief Parliamentary career, but remained an important advisor to the Liberal government of William Gladstone. He wrote, edited, and taught some, but his largest influence came in private friendships with powerful men. A staunch Liberal and moral philosopher, he is remembered for observing, Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
