John Tyndall was a British scientist and philosopher. Born and educated in Ireland, he joined the Ordnance Survey and was transferred to England. After furthering his education in Germany, he joined the Royal Society. He experimented with light refraction and the atmosphere, and completed early work on penicillin and Pasteurization. He invented or improved miner's lamps, lighthouse beacons, and the first practical gas mask. His popular lectures displayed his knack for communicating complex science to a popular audience. He was also a master mountaineer.

John Tyndall, 1820-1893. Born Ireland, physicist, writer, professor, Superintendent of Royal Institution in London. Did much to popularize science. Best known work deals with the scattering of light by atmospheric particles, the Tyndall Effect, which explains why the sky is blue. Mountain climber, studied glaciers with T.H. Huxley. Married at age 56.
