James was an American novelist, short story writer, critic and dramatist.

Henry James was born in New York, NY, in 1843. During his lifetime, he was a literary and art critic (writing for Nation from 1866-1869 and for Atlantic from 1866-1872), novelist, and short story author. In addition, he also wrote travel essays and plays. During the 1870s and 1880s, he wrote several of his best-known works: Daisy Miller: A Study (1878), Portrait of a Lady  (1881), and The Bostonians (1886). James was a frequent traveler and corresponded with other writers in the United States and abroad. In 1915, he emigrated to England. He died the following year.

Henry James (1843-1916) was a noted American-born English author, essayist, and critic. He left the U.S. in 1875, spending time first in Paris, then in England, where he settled and eventually became a British subject. Many of his works looked at social and cultural encounters between Americans and Europeans. He wrote 22 novels and over 100 other novellas, plays, and nonfiction essays. Included among his many works are The Europeans (1878); The Bostonians (1884); and The Turn of the Screw (1898).

Herbert Ruhm was born in Vienna and came to the United States in 1942. Ruhm studied at Hunter College, New York University, the New School for Social Research, and Michigan State University. Ruhm received his doctorate in English from the University of Chicago. In 1962, Ruhm joined the faculty at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Ruhm is also the editor of Lady Barberina and Other Tales.
