The AIA is an organization originally founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts by Harvard University professor Charles Eliot Norton and his friends and colleagues. The first meeting was in 1879 to form a society "for furthering and directing archaeological and artistic investigation and research." Norton was elected the first president. The first local society of the AIA was founded in Boston in 1884.

Administrative History: The Archaeological Institute of America, Baltimore Society was formed in 1888 by faculty of The Johns Hopkins University and other Baltimoreans.

Before 1888, it was known as the Archaeological Society of The Johns Hopkins University. In 1885, the national Institute began an official journal titled "American Journal of Achaeology and of the History of Fine Arts" which was published in Baltimore. Dr. Arthur L. Frothingham, a Fellow in Greek at the University, was a contributor and managing editor. Several members of the Baltimore Society contributed to a fund established to secure the journal for its first five years. In 1897, the title of the journal changed to "American Journal of Archaeology."

The Baltimore Society was formed in 1888 by faculty of the The Johns Hopkins University and others who shared an interest in antiquities and classical studies. Before 1888, the society was known as the Archaeological Society of The Johns Hopkins University.
