James Russell Lowell (1819-1891) earned his Harvard AB in 1838 and LL.B. in 1840. He was a poet, critic, editor, educator, and diplomat. From 1855 to 1886, Lowell was Smith Professor of the French and Spanish Languages and Literatures and Professor of Belles-Lettres at Harvard. He was University Lecturer from 1863 to 1864. United States President Rutherford B. Hayes appointed Lowell minister to Spain (1877-1880) and ambassador to Great Britain (1880-1885). Lowell was Professor of Belles Lettres Emeritus from 1886-1891. He served as an Overseer from 1887 to 1891.
