Born August 5, 1811 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, William Greenleaf Eliot (1811-1887) traveled to St. Louis as a missionary in 1834 and became the first Unitarian minister west of the Mississippi. He went on to become one of St. Louis's most influential and respected citizens, working in favor of the Union, emancipation, temperance, and women's rights. Eliot was also the co-founder of Washington University, served as the president of the board of directors from 1854 to 1887, and served as Chancellor from 1870 to 1887.
