Phillips, Henry, 1838-1895
Variant namesBiographical note: Henry Phillips was an author, philologist, and numismatist.
He was born in Philadelphia in 1838 and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1859. Although he was admitted to the Philadelphia Bar in 1859, Phillips devoted most of his life to researches and writings in the fields of philology, numismatics, and folklore. His contributions to the field of Numismatics were "History of American Colonial Paper Currency" (1865) and "History of American Continental Paper Money" (1866). He was most closely identified with the American Philosophical Society where he served at various times as curator, secretary, and librarian. Henry Phillips died in 1895.
