Dinah Maria Craik was a Victorian author. A precocious and talented child, she began publishing stories and poems to support her mother and younger brothers. Her popular poetry, short stories, and novels were inventive, if stylistically undistinguished, and featured sentimental yet practical characters. A compassionate and capable woman, she wrote for children and adults, exploring moral themes as well as imaginative adventures.
