Bret Harte was the original and essential writer of the American West, a deft satirist and natural stylist; the archetypes he established continue to help define the genre. Born in New York, Harte began writing in San Francisco, and his early stories of the West captured national attention. As his production decreased and his reputation and popularity declined, he found an enthusiastic audience in Europe, and spent his last years in the British Isles.

Biographical Information

Francis Bret Harte (August 25, 1836-May 6, 1902) was an American author and poet, best remembered for his accounts of pioneering life in California. Born in Albany, New York, he moved to California in 1854, later working there in a number of capacities, including miner, teacher, messenger, and journalist.
