Boughton, George Henry, 1834-1905
Variant namesBorn in England, George Henry Boughton grew up in New York State but returned to England and made his reputation there. Boughton was elected to the Royal Academy of Art and known for his genre scenes of peasant life in Italy and for his illustrations to histories and romances of early New England. Boughton illustrated Washington Irving's History of New York (1886) and Hawthorne's The scarlet letter (1908) for the Grolier Club.

English genre painter and illustrator who spent his youth in New York State. Boughton settled in London permanently in 1862, eventually becoming a member of the Royal Academy. Boughton worked in oils, watercolors, pastels and black and white, and he illustrated many historical works and romances dealing with Acadia and early New England. Some of his best known work as an illustrator is represented in two books commissioned by the Grolier Club: Washington Irving's History of New York (1886) and Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter (1908). Robert Hoe was a founding member of the Grolier Club.
