Lucius Fairchild, soldier and politician, was born in Ohio in 1831. At the age of 18 he set out for California to mine for gold. He spent six years in California and returned to Wisconsin in 1855. In 1861 he became a captain of the 1st Wisconsin regiment. As colonel of the 2nd Wisconsin, in the Battle of Gettysburg, he led a charge at Seminary Hill, where he lost his left arm. After the war Fairchild served six consecutive terms of governor of Wisconsin. In 1886, he was elected commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. He died in 1896.
