Papers of a CBS foreign correspondent, news broadcaster, and author, primarily pertaining to his later career when he was world affairs correspondent for Metromedia and a free-lance journalist. Business correspondence, which comprises much of the collection, consists of letters to and from several notable individuals and exchanges with publishers about free-lance work. From his 1967 tour of Southeast Asia there are reports and briefings on meetings with foreign officials and U.S. military officers and photographs of street life and destruction in Hanoi and elsewhere in North Vietnam caused by American bombing. The remainder of the collection consists of personal correspondence, financial records, speeches and writings, scripts for David Schoenbrun Reporting, and research files that include photocopied documents about the French underground during World War II. Also included is a recorded conversation with Dwight D. Eisenhower about Charles de Gaulle also concerning the French underground; North Vietnamese patriotic music; and the film David Schoenbrun on Vietnam: How Did We Get In? How Can We Get Out?

Among the U.S military officers pictured in this series are Generals Creighton Abrams, Omar Bradley, Claire Chennault, Mark Clark, Lucius Clay, George Armstrong Custer, Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., Benjamin O. Davis, Sr., Charles Dodge, James Doolittle, William J. Donovan, Robert L. Eichelberger, Benjamin D. Foulois, Frederick Funston, George W. Goethals, Adolphus W. Philanthropist, manufacturer of patent leather, president of NAACP, vice-president of Union of American Hebrew Congregations. Items include correspondence, reports, news releases, agenda, minutes, honors and awards, collected items, hate letters and literature, photographs, and selected family items. An example of the latter is a program for the Brit Milah (Circumcision and naming ceremony) of Joshua Adam Narva, great grandson of Kivie Kaplan. In general, the collection pertains to race relations and reflects the religious, cultural, and philanthropic activities of the man who has been described as a "bridge between Blacks and Jews" by Albert Vorspan. Many of the items pertain to the NAACP which he served as national president from 1966 until his death; others pertain to black colleges and higher education. Names in the collection include, in addition to that of his wife, Emily, those of Gloster B. Current, W. Averill Harriman, Lillie May Jackson, Martin Luther King, Jr., Clarence Mitchell, Stephen G. Spottswood, and Roy Wilkins.

Collection of campaign ephemera and other materials assembled by staff at the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library. Collection of campaign materials spans much of the United States political timeline, from 1840 to 2009. National and state political campaigns run by the Whig, Know-Nothing, Democratic, Republican, Libertarian, and other parties are documented through printed material, artifacts, and ephemera, such as posters, flyers, buttons, bumper stickers, party platforms, pamphlets, texts of speeches, newspapers, and clippings. Materials from state campaigns and other elections such as mayoral races chiefly come from North Carolina, with smaller amounts from Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, and other states. There are some materials documenting Durham, North Carolina political history, as well as a few items pertaining to a Humphrey-Muskie committee at Duke University. Title: Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001

The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.

Edith O'Shaughnessy (d. 1939) was an American author of fiction and autobiographical narratives concerning her life abroad. She was active in causes related to the Roman Catholic Church. Her husband, Nelson O'Shaughnessy (1876-1932), was a U.S. career diplomat who was stationed in Denmark, Russia, Austria-Hungary, and Mexico. After leaving the diplomatic service, he had a career in private industry. Elim O'Shaughnessy (1907-1966), Edith and Nelson O'Shaughnessy's son, joined the diplomatic service and served in France, the Soviet Union, Britain, and Hungary. Collection contains materials relating to Edith, Nelson and Elim O'Shaughnessy. Correspondence of Nelson O'Shaughnessy, 1899-1928, concerns diplomatic matters, his career in business, and personal and family affairs; correspondence of Edith O'Shaughnessy, 1907-1936, relates to her social and diplomatic life, war work in France, political activities, career as author of books and articles, and family matters. Some financial records are included with the correspondence. Her notes and diaries, 1907-1935, are largely social in nature. Writings include annotated typescripts and manuscripts of her published and unpublished works. Title: Frederick Henry Osborn Papers Circa 1903-1980

Frederick Henry Osborn was an administrator, humanist, and scientist. This collection includes letters, diaries, reports, speeches, drafts of articles and books, oral history interviews, and photographs. There are diaries and letters for his service in Europe with the American Red Cross during World War I. There are some letters and documents, such as patent applications and plans for inventions, from his "business career" period prior to 1928, after which he became a research associate at the American Museum of Natural History studying anthropology and population. This study led to his later important contributions to the redirection of eugenics study in the U.S. and the reorganization of the American Eugenics Society. His other related organizational work and publications relating to human and population genetics are also documented in this collection. There is significant material (letters, diaries, reports) related to Osborn's World War II contributions as the chairman of the Civilian Committee on Selective Service in 1940, and as head of the Morale Branch of the U.S. Army (later, the Information and Education Division of Special Services) in 1941. Also included are important documents, especially his diary, from his work as deputy representative on the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and the U.N. Commission for Conventional Armaments. His letters, writings, and speeches relating to foreign policy are extensive, spanning the period from the 1940s until his death, much of it from the Vietnam War years. The correspondence with Kathleen Harris is particularly rich in this respect. There is family correspondence reflecting his dynamic philosophy of life, with long series of letters to his parents (1917-1945) and to his children and grandchildren. His later civic and regional interests, as a long-time resident of Garrison, N.Y., are evidenced in the work he did on the Palisades Interstate Park Commission.

The largest series in the collection is compositions by Sherwood. This consists of manuscripts in various drafts with revisions and notes of his plays; papers depicting the writing of Roosevelt and Hopkins from research notes and synopses of interviews he conducted to the various drafts of the book from the first version to galley proofs; manuscripts of his articles, short stories, and book reviews; speeches by Sherwood; speeches he wrote for others, especially Franklin D. Roosevelt; and contracts, awards, receipts, and scrapbooks of clippings related to his career. The correspondence falls chronologically and topically into three categories. The smallest category, letters from the 1930s, documents his playwriting and work in Hollywood including discussion of casting and rewriting plays and the relationship between movies and the theater and between entertainment and partisan politics. The bulk of the correspondence, letters from the 1940s, pertains to America's conduct of the war and reflects Sherwood's own career in Washington and London as an American propagandist and speech writer and his efforts to research and write a book on the war. Other correspondence, from the late 1940s until his death, is from Sherwood's wide circle, both national and international, of friends and political colleagues in the liberal wing of the Democratic Party. Also contains a few manuscripts by others and condolence letters to his wife upon his death.

Harvey Fehling, a Lowell, Wisconsin native, discusses his service in the Navy during World War II. Fehling describes growing up on a farm in Lowell and serving in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Camp Madison as a youth. In 1939, Fehling voluntarily enlisted in the Navy. He describes a competitive selection process involving many physicals. The Navy did not accept many enlistees at that time because the U.S. had not yet joined World War II. Fehling discusses at length his basic training at Great Lakes Naval Base (Illinois). After six weeks of training, he chose an assignment on the USS Milwaukee where he served as a deck hand and an engineer. Fehling talks about his experiences on the USS Milwaukee in San Diego (California) and Pearl Harbor (Hawaii) in 1940. He discusses the large fleet docked in Pearl Harbor, which he and other sailors saw as a target for the Japanese. Fehling jokes that shore leave became less fun when the fleet arrived; before that, he would go to Waikiki beach and movies at the port. Fehling addresses gambling and drinking problems among sailors. According to Fehling, in mid-1941, the USS Milwaukee went on neutrality patrol in the Caribbean and the Atlantic. Fehling explains that the U.S. Navy did "spotting for the English Navy," warning the British about German ships. Fehling feels the neutrality patrol was part of Franklin D. Roosevelt's "excuse to get us in the war." Fehling explains that the USS Milwaukee escorted merchant ships from South America to Africa. Occasionally his crew would board the ships to make sure no raw materials (like rubber) were being transported to Germany. Fehling vividly describes the Navy's hazing rituals for sailors who passed the Equator for the first time. He mentions hazing was not permited after the U.S. entered World War II. Fehling relates that during the war his envoy sunk four or five German submarines. Once these ships sunk, the USS Milwaukee would leave the German crew in lifeboats all day before taking them aboard as prisoners. In 1944, the USS Milwaukee was turned over to the Soviets to boost their fleet. Fehling describes the voyage to Russia and characterizes Russian naval officers as intelligent and fluent in English. Fehling expresses sadness at handing over the ship because it had been his home for four years. He mentions standing near William Averell Harriman (famous statesman and ambassador to the Soviet Union) during the "turning over" ceremony. Fehling returned to England on a British destroyer. He describes British food and alcohol rations and animosity between British and American sailors resulting in fights. Fehling tells of visiting an isolated village in Siberia and rescuing a Russian merchant crew in the Arctic Circle whose ship was destroyed by German torpedoes. During the D-Day Invasion, Fehling served on British excursion boats that "looked like the Mississippi Queen." Fehling explains these boats were designed for shallow water and were supposed to prevent another disaster like Dunkirk (France). His boat transported wounded soldiers from Omaha Beach (France) to South Hampton (England). After D-Day, Fehling was reassigned to the USS Van Valkenburgh in the Pacific Theater, where he was a chief water tender. Fehling mentions this ship was named for Captain Franklin Van Valkenburgh who died in Pearl Harbor. Van Valkenburgh's son served on the ship as did Henry Maier, future mayor of Milwaukee (Wisconsin). Fehling goes into detail about the differences between destroyers and cruisers. Fehling describes at length the Battle of Iwo Jima. The USS Van Valkenburgh bombarded Iwo Jima from the shore to protect the Marines on the ground. Fehling did not see the battle because he worked below deck. After Iwo Jima, the USS Van Valkenburgh went to Okinawa (Japan) and joined a line of destroyers that surrounded the island. They were targeted by kamikaze attacks, and Fehling states only twenty percent of the destroyers survived. He describes high casualties and a grueling battle lasting three months. Fehling discusses the atomic bombing of Japan and his views on it. He says none of the sailors understood what it was and thought it was just "a big, mysterious bomb." Fehling describes arriving in Nagasaki after the bomb was dropped. The USS Van Valkenburgh picked up American, British, and Dutch prisoners held in Japanese camps in Kyushu and took them to hospital ships. Fehling reveals he walked around in Nagasaki because nobody knew about the radiation. Fehling vividly describes a barren landscape. He states the dead bodies had been removed, but dead animals remained in the streets. He says "we couldn't believe what the heck hit" Nagaski. After V-J Day, Fehling asked to be discharged because he had earned enough points. He decided against reenlisting because he "didn't want to go through that anymore." Fehling explains that, after his homecoming, he had trouble adjusting to civilian life in Horicon (Wisconsin). Fehling is joined in the interview by his wife Arlene Fehling and his sister Sharon Elskey. Mrs. Fehling relates that she met Mr. Fehling in Reeseville (Wisconsin). Her first husband was killed on the USS Twiggs during a kamikaze attack in the Okinawa campaign. The Fehlings comment on the amazing coincidence that the USS Van Valkenburgh sailed alongside the USS Twiggs that night, rescuing wounded sailors. Fehling reports using the GI Bill to attend sheet metal trade school. He worked in construction and as a machinist in Beaver Dam (Wisconsin) until retiring in 1985. He mentions joining veterans organizations because he enjoyed the camaraderie and felt it was his duty. He belonged to the American Legion for fifty years and was commander of the Reeseville post in the 1950s. Fehling also participated in the VFW in Lowell and shipmates associations for the USS Milwaukee and USS Van Valkenburgh.

Title: James Bruce papers

James Bruce (1892-1980) spent most of his life in the world of business and banking, working in both New York and Baltimore. He served variously as president of the Baltimore Trust Company, director of American Airlines, and vice president of the National Dairy Products Corporation. He and his family also had ties to diplomacy and early in his life, just prior to enlistment for World War I, Bruce served as private secretary to his uncle, Thomas Nelson Page, U. S. Ambassador to Italy. Several years later, from 1947 to 1949, Bruce himself served as U. S. Ambassador to Argentina. He subsequently served as the director of the Foreign Military Assistance Program, forerunner of NATO, before returning to his career in business in 1950. The materials in this collection focus on the years 1910 to 1960 and treat a variety of subjects such as Bruce's years at Princeton; his military and diplomatic service; and a 1958 campaign for a U. S. Senate seat. News clippings, publications, by Bruce and others, audio-visual materials, and correspondence are included. Letters from numerous prominent individuals, including Juan and Eva Peron, John F. Kennedy, Harry S. Truman, and Dean Acheson, form a significant portion of the collection. Also included is substantial genealogical information relating to the Bruce family.

This study led to his later important contributions to the redirection of eugenics study in the U.S. and the reorganization of the American Eugenics Society. The files actually consist of copies of press releases, issued mainly by Governor Averell Harriman (1956-1958) and the Department of Labor; scattered issues of newsletters of the State University of New York (1958); and approximately 15 duplicate black and white photographic prints (ca. 8 x 10 inches) of Parisi (formal portrait), Robert Wagner, and (apparently) members of the Workmen's Compensation Board attending an unidentified function. Title: Bessie Hillman correspondence

Letters, cards, telegrams, and other items from Bessie Hillman's family, personal friends and admirers; from rank-and-file, joint boards, and union locals; and from labor leaders, authors, and politicians. There is also a diary kept by Bessie Hillman during her trip to Israel in 1952-1953, and a large collection of condolences that she received after her husband's death. The correspondence covers a number of political, social, union, and personal matters. There are letters from women organizers in the South; from leaders of locals and regional joint boards; from ACWA officials such as Jacob Potofsky and Joseph Schlossberg; and memoranda from the ACWA General Executive Board, reflecting Bessie Hillman's long service to the union as executive, organizer, and mentor, particularly to women. Correspondents also include union leaders outside of the ACWA, among them David Dubinsky, A. Philip Randolph, Walter Reuther, and Leonard Woodcock. There is Hillman's reminiscence of Rose Schneiderman of the Women's Trade Union League. Letters from a number of leading political, cultural, and social figures, including Mary Anderson, Mary McLeod Bethume, Jacqueline Kennedy, Arthur Goldberg, Irving Ives, Lady Bird Johnson, Averell Harriman, Herbert Lehman, William O'Dwyer, Esther Peterson, Harry Truman, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Robert F. Wagner, Jr. make up another significant portion of the collection. These items reflect Bessie Hillman's long-standing involvement in social causes and political campaigns, particularly in civil rights issues, within the City and State of New York and throughout the United States. Other individuals and organizations represented in the collection include: Cornell ILR School professor Maurice F. Neufeld; Carl Sandberg; Chaim Weizmann; local unions and joint boards of the ACWA; the American Labor Education Service; the Democratic National Committee; the Hudson Shore School; the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions; the National Consumers League; the Women's Bureau of the U.S. Dept. of Labor; and the Women's Trade Union League. Topics include: administrative matters within the ACWA; civil rights; descriptions and reminiscences of travel to Israel; labor legislation at the local and national levels; political campaigns and activities, chiefly through the Democratic Party; union organizing; women in the union; and worker education.
