Clark M. Clifford was born on December 25, 1906, in Fort Scott, Kansas. He received his LL.B from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, in 1928. From 1928 to 1944 he worked as an attorney in St. Louis. He married Margery Pepperell Kimball on October 3, 1931. From 1944 to 1946 he served as an officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve. From 1945 to 1946 he served as an Assistant Naval Aide to President Harry S. Truman, then became the President's official Naval Aide in 1946. From 1946 to 1950 he served as Special Counsel to President Truman. From 1950 to 1968 he worked as an attorney at the Clifford & Miller firm in Washington, D.C., and was an unofficial adviser to Presidents Truman, Kennedy, and Johnson. From 1968 to 1969 he served as the Secretary of Defense. From 1969 to 1991 he again worked as an attorney in Washington, D.C. at the Clifford & Warnke firm. During this time he served as an unofficial adviser to President Jimmy Carter and was Chairman of First American Bankshares. In 1991 he wrote Counsel to the President with Richard Holbrooke. He died on October 10, 1998.
