Ogden Rogers Reid was born in New York City in 1925. He graduated from Yale University in 1949, his school years interrupted by service in World War II. He worked as a reporter and columnist for the New York Herald Tribune (1950-1953), before serving as president of the paper's European edition (1953-1959) and vice president (1954-1955) and president/editor of the New York Herald, Inc. (1955-1959). Reid served on the board of directors of the Panama Canal Company (1956-1959) and as Ambassador to Israel (1959-1961). He also served as a U.S. Congressman from New York, first as a Republican (1962-1972) and then as a Democrat (1972-1974). He was defeated as the Democratic candidate for governor of New York in 1974. Reid then served as state commissioner for environmental conservation (1975-1976).
