John Torrey Papers, 1788-1871 (bulk 1806-1871)
Title:
John Torrey Papers, 1788-1871 (bulk 1806-1871)
The collection consists of correspondence, both incoming and outgoing, from 1818 to 1873, and pertains to Torrey's work as a botanist and professor. Much of the scientific correspondence is in regard to the identification of plants from the vast interior of the continent through government sponsored expeditions, primarily John Fremont's second and third expeditions to the Rocky Mountains in 1842 and to Oregon and northern California in 1843. The collection contains plant lists and collecting localities as well as botanical notes and plant descriptions from Asa Gray and John Torrey. A collection of letters to and from individuals other than John Torrey, (some of which pre-date Torrey's birth) are also contained in the collection. It is not clear how Torrey came to possess these letters. Manuscripts of Torrey's Florula Princetoniana and Calendarium florae for the vicinity of New York have been cataloged and reside in the Rare Book Room. The collection also contains some artwork drawn by John Torrey himself, and other drawings he used as a reference for his identification work. The artwork from Torrey's Plants of New York for the Cabinet at Albany and Genera of Fungi were drawn by John Torrey. Other drawings include "'Figures of Hepaticae' copied from Hooker's great work", Musci exotici. The artwork has been removed to the New York Botanical Garden Art and Illustration collection - Collection #60. John Torrey's vasculum is also contained within the collection.

Samuel Wells Williams family papers, 1809-1983, 1809-1941
Title:
Samuel Wells Williams family papers 1809-1983 1809-1941
The papers include correspondence (comprising over half of the collection), manuscripts of Samuel Wells Williams's , themes and lecture notes by Frederick Wells Williams, diaries, newspaper clippings, articles on China, maps, and pictures. The bulk of the correspondence relates to S.W. Williams, missionary, diplomat, and sinologue. The period between 1845 and 1855 has extensive correspondence with missionaries and with James Dwight Dana and Matthew C. Perry, whom Williams accompanied on his mission to open Japan and on his return visit in 1854. Williams's letters to friends and family comment on progress made and their reception in Japan. In 1856 Williams became secretary and interpreter to the American Legation in China and many of the letters refer to Chinese problems of the following 20 years. His correspondents include, in addition to Dana and Perry, Anson Burlingame, Hamilton Fish, Asa Gray, Frederick Low, William Bradford Reed, and William Henry Seward. The remaining correspondence covers the period 1885 to 1939, encompassing the correspondence of F.W. Williams, Yale professor, and Wayland Wells Williams, writer. Title:
Woolsey family papers, 1750-1976 (inclusive), 1811-1921 (bulk).
The papers document three generations of the Woolsey family. The most prominent figures in the collection are William Walton Woolsey (1766-1839), land owner and merchant in New York City; his son, Theodore Dwight Woolsey (1801-1889), Greek scholar, political theorist and president of Yale College; and Theodore Salisbury Woolsey (1852-1929), professor of international law at Yale Law School, son of Theodore Dwight Woolsey. The papers of William Walton Woolsey contain extensive business correspondence, ledgers, legal papers, documents relating to land sales in New York and Ohio, as well as family and personal letters. Since he was engaged in the importation of sugar, cotton and hardware, some of his business correspondence is political with discussions of the Jay Treaty of 1794, the problems of piracy, American neutrality in the 1790s and the general politics of the period. Important correspondents are Chauncey Goodrich, Archibald Gracie, Eli Whitney, Noah Webster, Elihu and Nathaniel Chauncey, Oliver Wolcott, Benjamin Tallmadge, Jedidiah Morse, James Roosevelt, John A. Schuyler, Comfort Sands, John Broome, and Nicholas Bayard. The papers of Theodore Dwight Woolsey contain his writings on Greek language and literature, the Bible, international law and the texts of his sermons.

Keller, a sociologist, author, and student and colleague of William Graham Sumner. Keller frequently corresponded with individuals on the subject of Sumner, and Yale University figures such as Arthur T. Hadley, James Rowland Angell, and Charles Seymour often felt Keller's displeasure over the University's treatment of the Sumner legacy. He also corresponded with colleagues and former students, Sumner biographers, and family members. Files relating to the William Graham Sumner Club, which he helped found, are also included. Drafts of several published and unpublished writings and many student gradebooks detail his literary and teaching activities.

Lesley, J. Peter, 1819-1903. Papers, 1826-1898
Title:
J.P. Lesley Papers 1826-1898
After a brief career in the Congregational church, J. Peter Lesley (1819-1903) left the ministry in 1852 to work full-time as a geologist. Having gained experience in structural geology and stratigraphy with the First Pennsylvania Geological Survey (1836-1842), Lesley became an expert in the geology of coal, working for the Pennsylvania Railroad and other corporations and conducting some of the first systematic studies of the state's hydrocarbon resources. A long-time professor at the University of Pennsylvania, he was elected to the APS in 1856, serving variously as its librarian, secretary, and vice president, and he was selected as Director of the Second Pennsylvania Geological Survey (1875-1889). The Lesley Papers include letters to and from Peter Lesley and his wife, Susan on geology, coal and iron mining, abolition, educational reform, organized charity, and Unitarianism. The collection offers important insight into academic and applied geology in late 19th century Pennsylvania, the development of the coal and iron industries, as well as into the Lesleys' progressive social and intellectual milieu. It is divided into three series: Lesley's general correspondence, his correspondence with his brother Joseph, and microfilms of Lesley's research notes.

Morse family. Morse family papers, 1779-1868 (inclusive).
Title:
Morse family papers, 1779-1868 (inclusive).
The principal figures in this collection are Jedidiah Morse (1761-1826) and his sons Samuel Finley Breese Morse (1791-1872) and Richard Cary Morse (1795-1868). More than half of the collection is made up of correspondence (1779-1868) among members of the family. Also included are legal and financial papers, sermons by Jedidiah and Richard Cary Morse, travel journals, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, printed matter, and photographs. Jedidiah Morse's missionary work among the Indians and his concern for their condition is reflected in a number of letters on the subject. Samuel F. B. Morse, who had a double career as a painter and as the inventor of the telegraph, is represented by correspondence, depositions on his invention, and three drawings by a student (dated 1862). Richard Cary Morse's papers contain a biography of Jedidiah Morse and extensive journals on travels to the Bay of Fundy in 1822; to Europe in 1837-1838 in search of a cure for his depression; and again to Europe in 1855. One of the entries in his journal of 1837-1838 is his account of the coronation procession of Queen Victoria. Correspondence with his wife, Sarah Louise, between 1838 and 1850 conveys a vivid picture of family life and many details on the sickness of children.

Albert Galloway Keller papers 1888-1956
The papers consist of correspondence, writings, student and teaching files, and miscellanea documenting the personal life and professional career of Albert G.
