Charles Sanders Peirce was an American logician, mathematician, philosopher, and scientist, born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Peirce was educated as a chemist and employed as a scientist for 30 years, but is appreciated largely by his contributions to logic, mathematics, philosophy, and semiotics (and his founding of pragmatism). Peirce was intermittently employed in various scientific capacities by the United States Coast Survey between 1859 and 1891.

Biographical Note: Charles S. Peirce was a physicist, mathematician, and logician and has been recognized as the founder of pragmatism.

He was born in Cambridge, Mass. in 1839. He received the B.S. degree (1859) and the M.A. degree (1862) from Harvard and was later employed, 1859-1860 and 1861-1891, by the U.S. Coast Survey where his discoveries in math, astronomy, and physics led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1877. Peirce lectured at The Johns Hopkins University in logic, 1879-1884, and presented a lecture series in philosophy at Harvard and the Lowell Institute. Charles S. Peirce died in 1914.
