Geologist and paleontologist who served several years as the state geologist of Iowa (1855-1858). He began his career as a geologist in New York in the 1830s and also served as the state geologist for Wisconsin (1857-1860).

Hall was educated at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. and studied under Amos Eaton. He worked on the New York State Geological Survey and prepared an 8 volume report on New York State's paleontology. He served as State Geologist of Iowa from 1855 to 1858 and of Wisconsin from 1857 to 1860. He was director of the New York State Museum from 1866 to 1893 when he was appointed State Geologist. Hall died in 1898.
