Ira Remsen was a chemist and professor of chemistry at The Johns Hopkins University.

He was born in New York City, Feb. 10, 1846. In accordance with his father's wishes, Remsen studied medicine, receiving the M.D. in 1867. In 1868 he abandoned medical practice to devote himself to his primary interest, chemistry, which he subsequently studied at University of Munich and Gottingen (Ph. D., 1870). He returned to the U.S. in 1872, later teaching at Williams College. In 1876 he accepted first Chair of Chemistry at Johns Hopkins, where he is credited with co-discovery of saccharin. He served as Acting President (1889-90) and 2nd President (1901-13) of The Johns Hopkins University. Ira Remsen died in Carmel, California in 1927.
