The bark Golden Gate and clipper ship Nightingale were both involved in the Western Union Telegraph Expedition to British Columbia, Alaska and Russia to survey areas where the Western Union Telegraph Company planned to construct a telegraph line linking America and Europe. The line was never completed. Charles S. Bulkley was Engineer-in-Chief and Charles M. Scammon was Chief of Marine. The bark Golden Gate was the flagship of the expedition from June 1865 to March 1866, after which the clipper ship Nightingale became the expedition's flagship.
The telegraph was developed by Samuel F. B. Morse, with the assistance of Alfred Vail, in the 1830s. Their first crude working model was constructed in 1835-1836.
The New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Company was organized at Rochester, New York in 1851 by Hiram Sibley and Samuel L. Selden, who sought to acquire and unite all the telegraph companies then located west of Buffalo, New York into a single unified system. In 1856 the company's name was changed to Western Union Telegraph Company, and in 1861 its headquarters was moved from Rochester to New York City.
Western Union completed America's first transcontinental telegraph line in 1861. The company introduced stock tickers in 1866, and money transfer service in 1871. In 1884 Western Union was named one of the original stocks in the first Dow Jones Average.
Western Union was controlled by the American Telephone & Telegraph Company from 1908 to 1913. In 1945 Western Union merged with longtime rival Postal Telegraph Company.
In 1994 Western Union Financial Services, Inc., was acquired by First Financial Management Corporation. First Financial Management Corporation merged with First
Data Corporation in 1995, and Western Union Financial Services became a subsidiary of First Data Corporation.

Cornell, Ezra, 1807-1874. Ezra Cornell papers, 1746-1888, 1844-1870 (bulk).
Title:
Ezra Cornell papers, 1746-1888, 1844-1870 (bulk).
Accounts, broadsides, correspondence, estimates, memoranda, maps, newspaper clippings, and other papers. The earliest papers, 1828-1843, cover the years when Cornell worked in Ithaca and travelled for Barnaby and Mooers plows. They include letters, accounts, and other papers concerning his employment by Jeremiah Beebe, the owner of a flour and plaster mill on Fall Creek in Ithaca, N.Y. and his other business interests in Ithaca. Family letters contain information about his work, plans and opinions; news about his growing family; and reports of events in Ithaca. After 1838, there is considerable detail about Cornell's travels in Maine and Georgia, selling Barnaby and Mooers plows. Papers, 1843-1860, relate to the promotion, construction, and investment in telegraph lines in the eastern and midwestern United States and Canada, and include contracts, lists of stockholders, briefs of legal cases, accounts, financial statements and reports, broadsides, pamphlets, and sketches; a series of letters from Samuel F.B. Morse; material relating to the construction of the first telegraph line from Washington to Baltimore; and material relating to Cornell's construction and operation of other lines. The papers reveal the difficulties of construction and maintenance, and the conflicts between investors. Of particular interest is the material dealing with the beginnings of Western Union (1854-1855). There are also papers relating to Cornell's agricultural interest in purebred stock and in the Tompkins County and New York State Agricultural Societies; his interest in coal lands and coal oil in Pennsylvania; his building of the Cornell Library in Ithaca; his interest in the Casacadilla health resort; and to his promotion of the growth of Ithaca. After 1860 the papers relate to local, state, and national politics; his election to the New York State Legislature; the Albany Agricultural Works; the development of railway lines including the Utica, Ithaca, and Elmira Rail Road, the Geneva & Ithaca Rail Road, the Ithaca & Cortland Railroad, and the Erie Railroad; correspondence with and relief efforts for Civil War soldiers. Correspondence, drawings and maps, and other papers pertaining to the conception, founding, and construction of Cornell University, with particular reference to Andrew Dickson White, the first President. Title:
United Telegraph Workers Records Bulk, 1940-1986 1928-1996, (Bulk 1940-1986)
The United Telegraph Workers, known until 1968 as the Commercial Telegraphers Union of America, emerged from a series of struggles between smaller unions of private and postal telegraph workers. Pitted against a single dominant employer, Western Union, and beset by technological change in the industry, the union declined in numbers after World War II. In 1986 it merged with the Communications Workers of America. The collection includes records of predecessor and rival unions, correspondence, bargaining files, bulletins, convention records and legal files. NOTE: This collection is stored offsite, and advance notice is required for use.

Title:
Interview with Walter Dial [electronic resource] 2004 May 12 / interviewer: Hope Murphy ; transcriber: Adele Barnes.
Walter Dial begins his interview by describing growing up in the Third Ward neighborhood and going to elementary school at Isabella Wyche He goes into some detail about his experiences with school discipline. Dial's family were members of the First Baptist West Church. All churches in the neighborhood sponsored summer programs (such as Baptist Training Union) for children. He reminisces about such popular past times as roller skating, going to the movies at Lincoln Theater, and riding the trains thanks to free passes given to him by a neighbor. At Second Ward High School, he was on some school teams. Dial talks about working as a paperboy, making a bicycle so he could work for Western Union, and working in the school cafeteria so he could get free lunches. Dial relates his work at Mercy Hospital before being drafted into the army. Dial shares with the interviewer, the story of a neighborhood called Blue Heaven. He remembers visits by Martin Luther King, Jackie Robinson, and Marian Anderson as part of the neighborhood's Lyceum programs. Dial's love of Second Ward and the camaraderie of the neighborhood pervades his interview.

Musser, A. Milton. Letter to Brigham Young, 1871, November 6.
Title:
Letter to Brigham Young, 1871, November 6.
Letter from Amos Milton Musser to Brigham Young in which he details the successes of the Pioche telegraph business. He includes a summary of the company's business receipts, notes a $1000 subscription from the Meadow Valley Mining Company, and mentions additional subscribers to California Stock. He also expresses his concerns about the Western Union Company, which was "threatening" to install a telegraph line from a mining camp at Hamilton to Pioche. Musser describes a meeting in Reno with Agent Ladd of the Western Union Service where they discussed the possibility of graded tariffs to Nevada. Musser concluded that the company was "unrelenting in high rates" and charged as much to send a line to Hamilton as San Francisco. The letter is marked "excerpts" and "copy." Included on the verso of the letter is a brief account of Musser's return to Utah following the India mission in 1857. He describes being in charge of 800 Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints emigrants traveling from Liverpool to Boston on board the George Washington and their journey across the plains to Utah with Captain William G. Young's company. He notes that emigration agent James A. Little, John Taylor, and Erastus Snow helped oversee the trip.

American Communications Association. Records, 1934-1999.
Title:
Records, 1934-1999.
Records of the American Communications Association (ACA), a labor union representing workers in the telegraph, radio, and other communications industries. Originally founded in 1932 as the American Radio Telegraphists Association, the ACA was affiliated with the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) until 1950 when it was ousted for alleged Communist infiltration; in 1966 it became an affiliate of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. The records document the structure and activities of the union, and include publications, grievance, contract, and negotiation materials; testimony presented to congressional committees and the Federal Communications Commission; information on employers and disputes with rival unions; and scrapbooks of newspaper clippings. Locals which are well-represented include Broadcast Local 1, 10, 111, and Teleregister Local 876. Employers include American Cable & Radio Corporation, American Telephone and Telegraph, Mackay Radio Telegraph, Postal Telegraph Company, Radio Corporation of America, and Western Union Telegraph Company. Extensive files document ACA's opposition to the merger of Western Union and Postal Telegraph. The processed portion of this series is summarized above, dates 1934-1974 and is described in the register. Additional accessions date 1940-1999 and are described below. Locals 10 and 111 are well represented in the additions.

Title:
Carnegie Estate business records, 1886-1959 (bulk 1900-1920).
Despite their individual unimportance, the records in bulk represent about half of the collection and document the intricacies of daily life on the Carnegie Estate on Cumberland Island, especially at Dungeness, Stafford, Greyfield, and Plum Orchard. What exists here are not the lives of the Carnegies but the life of an Estate they had created and which, for a while, took on a life of its own. Cancelled checks and disbursement vouchers were not saved, nor are invoices for every year complete. Major sets of records cover the Cumberland Route steamboat line, the Drew stationers, H.E. Dotterer, Standard Oil Company, and Western Union Telegraph Company.

Title:
Papers of Thomas T. Eckert, 1862-1877, (1862-1867 )
Archive of Eckert's professional papers that he accumulated from 1862 to 1877; the bulk of the collection covers his Civil War service. The collection includes: 14 ledgers of telegrams received by the War Department (1862, Feb. 2 00 1867, Aug. 1); 7 ledgers of ciphered telegrams sent from Washington (1862, Feb. 1 -- 1867, July 30); 1 ledger of ciphered communications of the Army of the Potomac (1862, Aug. 29- 1863, Apr. 28); 4 ledgers of telegraphic communications of the Union post at Fortress Monroe, Va. (1863, Aug. 29 - Apr. 6, 1865), and 2 ledgers of messages that the special investigating agent Charles A. Dana sent from Chattanooga and Knoxville (1863, Sept. 10- 1864, Aug. 2). Also included are 8 letterpress books of Thomas T. Eckert's own correspondence, supply orders for the Military Telegraph, a ledger of Jay Gould's American Union Telegraph, and cipher code books with different versions of the ciphers in use by various operators. The ledgers of the United States Military Telegraph cover the campaing of the Union armies in the Eastern and Western theaters, intelligence and covert operations, the organization transportation, communications, hospitals, provision of the troops and other aspects of the logistics; personnel issues; fugitive slaves The ledgers contain the initial text of telegraphic messages, as they were transmitted by the operators and before they were copied on loose sheets papers to be delivered to the addressee. Some of the sent messages appear to have been dictated rather than drafted in writing. The sent messages are ciphered; the received telegrams are mostly decoded. Some telegrams are followed by brief messages that operators sent to each other. The letterpress books contain Eckert's own telegrams received between Mar. 30, 1864 and Apr. 7, 1860 and sent between June 4, 1865 and Aug. 7, 1866. Subjects inlude the construction, repair, and maintenance of the Union telegraph lines; transportation; relationship with the press, including with the agents of Reuters and Associated Press, intelligence and covert operations in 1864-1865, the elections of 1864, etc. Correspondents include Abraham Lincoln, Edwin M. Stanton, Anson Stager, Thomas A. Scott, Charles A. Dana, George B. McClellan, Ulysses S. Grant, Henry W. Halleck, William T. Sherman, John A. Dix, Alan Pinkerton, and others.

The Joseph H. Vertrees Papers consist of primarily textual records that document the legacy of a notable American educator and authority on industrial relations. In particular, the Papers chronicle the contributions that Vertrees made to the Rutgers University Extension Department and to the University's Institute of Management and Labor Relations (IMLR), now the School of Management and Labor Relations (SMLR). Also represented in the Papers are materials that Vertrees compiled during a thirty-year corporate and government career that predated and overlapped his employment at Rutgers.

Title:
Administrative files, 1920-1964.
This series documents the administrative activities of the Public Service Commission as it carries out its function of supervising and regulating public transportation and utilities. The records consist of correspondence, memoranda, minutes, and reports that provide information on policy, organization, program development, and other administrative functions. Among the services regulated by the Commission are electricity, gas, water, telephone, telegraph, radio, and public transportation, i.e., railroads, buses, truck lines, and taxis. Also included are Interstate Commerce Commission rulings and decisions. The series is arranged by a numerical filing scheme making it necessary to consult the Index to Administrative Files to obtain access to the records. The index is a series of three by five inch note cards that are arranged alphabetically by subject and provide the corresponding file number. (See ALAV90-A192.).
