The bark Golden Gate and clipper ship Nightingale were both involved in the Western Union Telegraph Expedition to British Columbia, Alaska and Russia to survey areas where the Western Union Telegraph Company planned to construct a telegraph line linking America and Europe. John Russell Jacks, Sr., was employed by Southern Railway and Western Union. He lived in Dothan, Ala., 1962-1995, where he was a member of First Methodist Church and a founding member of the Wiregrass Society for Railway History (WHRS) in 1967. Jacks was also a Kiwanis member and member of the National Rose Society. After leaving Dothan, he moved to Birmingham, Ala. He is interred in Barnesville, Ga.
