Incorporated July 15, 1994 in Delaware as MCI Metro, Inc, MCImetro, Inc. (name changed July 3, 1995) was a part of MCI's efforts to develop local telephone networks. A wholly-owned subsidiary of MCI Telecommunications Corporation, the company was to build fiber optics rings in major U.S. metropolitan areas and consequently increase competition in the local telephone market. MCI Metro's predecessor, W.U. ATS, Inc. was purchased by MCI Communications Corporation c. 1990 and held the Western Union ROWs which were to be used by MCI Metro, Inc. MCImetro, Inc. merged with MCI Telecommunications Corporation on December 1, 1998.
