Sturtevant, J. B. (Joseph Bevier), 1851-1910

Joseph Sturtevant purchased his first camera in 1883. His step-father lived at Fort Totten, now in the state of North Dakota.

Horsfal Mine, a mile east of Gold Hill on Gold Run (Sunshine Canyon Road), was in operation from 1859-1862. David Horsfal discovered gold there in 1859. "First lode mine of gold in Boulder County. Produced about $200,000" worth of gold. "Horsfal, Black Cloud and Slide Mines were owned by Slide Mines, Inc. Prior to World War II, it was Boulder County's largest gold operation."

Summerville was a mining camp nine miles below Gold Hill in the center of the tellurium belt. Bryon N. Sanford discovered gold in 1872; and American Queen Gold Mining Company managed the mine, which ceased to operate in 1907. It was succeeded in 1908 by the Cash Gold Mining Company.

Copper Rock was a small mining community about a mile below Sunset in Four Mile Canyon, established in 1892. It was named for a copper-green stain on the cliff opposite the campsite. It became a station on the mountain railroad, had a hotel, post office and other buildings; but now is gone.

Joseph Wolff's Orchard Grove fruit Farm was originally named Rattlesnake Ranch. Established on 160 acres on the east side of Broadway between Alpine and Forest Avenues in 1864, the farm was reduced to 64 acres by the time Wolff sold it in 1908. Wolff grew wheat, grapes, apples, srawberries, raspberries, blackberries, rhubarb, pumpkin, corn etc., and ran dairy cattle.

The building was left in the middle of 13th Street when property owners on Walnut placed bricks and other obstacles in the street because they considered the wood frame building a fire hazard. The City Council hurriedly passed an ordinance to extend the fire district and the move to 1240 Walnut was completed. Streamer reopened his drugstore in the new building at 1201 Pearl Street.

Mont Alto was a resort site developed by the Colorado & Northwestern Railroad. It opened July 15, 1898. It was popular for all-day picnics, evening dances, and moonlight excursions. It was abandoned after the completion of the Eldora branch and the pavilion was taken down and transported in sections to Glacier Lake before the opening of the tourist season in 1905.

Highland School was last used as an elementary school in June 1970. It has since been the home of the Community Free School, Head Start, and Historic Boulder. Milepost 24.6; elevation 9,300 ft. Originally it was Dew Drop, named about 1894 after the Dew Drop Mine. Later the name was changed to Frances in honor of Frances Daniels, daughter of the president of the Fig Five Mines. A small frame station with platform stood beside the tracks. An estimated 35 families lived in Frances at the peak of its prosperity.

City directories list four stores called Noah's Ark that were owned by Jesse D. Long: 2024 14th Street (1899); 1445 Pearl (1903-1907); 1429 Pearl (1908); and 1428 Pearl (1911-1913). All were china, notions, and hardware stores. In 1906 Long added seeds to his inventory. The seeds became so popular that he started the J.D. Long Seed Company and Long's Gardens at 2043 Broadway.

The house was built in 1870 by The Reverend Nathan Thompson. It was designed as a two story house, but plans were changed when the entire supply of bricks in town was used up. The house was razed in 1904 and replaced by the Earnest Grill house.

On the front page of the Tribune on 30 October 1903, there was a long article about a new resort in Boulder Canyon. "Hadley's Log Cabins Have Been Dedicated. The health resort and road house formally opened with appropriate dedication exercises and a dance. Several cabins have already been built and large resort promised for next year ... So an adjournment to the Road House was taken. Here not only the lunch counter outside the building, but the dining room tables inside, were loaded down with good things." Wolf had an earlier store called Branch Meat Market at 1230 Pearl and W. W. Wolf's Meat Market at 1440 Pearl, both in 1892 city directory. He moved the business to 2054 Broadway, still calling it Branch Meat Market, ca. 1899. He subsequently changed the name to W. W. Wolf.

The Logan Mine, named for General John A. Logan, and the Yellow Pine Mine, rich in silver and copper ore, were among the big mines of the Crisman area. The community also became known as a station on the mountain railroad and as the site of a tunneled wine cellar built by Francois Pierre Ardourel, who claimed the Grand Republic Mine after coming to the United States from France.

Named for Obed Crisman, one of its early settlers, Crisman is in Four Mile Canyon, west of Boulder. The Logan Mine, one of the richest gold mines in the county, was found in 1874. When other mines were discovered in the area, the town of Crisman was platted and began to develop. Obed Crisman built an ore concentrator there.
