George II, King of Great Britain, 1683-1760. Instructions to General Braddock relating to his command in North America, 1754 November 25.
Title:
Instructions to General Braddock relating to his command in North America, 1754 November 25.
There are three separate instructions. The first instructions order Braddock to America to assume command and concern the levying and provisioning of troops, alliance with the Indians, and the ending of illegal trade with the French. He concludes with directions to Braddock to acquaint himself with recent events "relating to the Summons of the Fort which was Erecting on the Forks of the Monongehela, and the Skirmish that followed soon after, and likewise of the Action in the great Meadows, near the River Ohio ..." a direct reference to George Washington's recent expedition to the Ohio, though Washington is not mentioned by name. Private instructions concern action to be taken if the colonies do not raise sufficient funds to support the troops. Secret instructions, actually drafted by King George's son, the Duke of Cumberland, order Braddock to conduct a multi-objective campaign against the French forts on the Ohio, the falls and passes of the Niagara, Crown Point on Lake Champlain, and Fort Beauséjour in Nova Scotia. Among the British and colonials mentioned in the document are Sir John St. Clair, Deputy Quarter Master General; Sir Peter Halkett, Commander of the 44th Regiment of Foot; Colonel Thomas Dunbar of the 48th Regiment of Foot; Viscount Augustus Keppel, naval commander and later first lord of the Admiralty; Robert Dinwiddie, Lt. Cadwalader family. Collection, 1630-1900.
Title:
Collection, 1630-1900.
The papers of General John Cadwalader include material on the Trenton-Princeton campaign; letters of George Washington, 1776-1778; Cadwalader's memorandum book, 1776-1777; letters of Thomas Wharton; documents relating to the Cadwalader-Reed controversy; James McHenry letters, 1781; an Alexander Hamilton letter, 1783; revolutionary matters; family papers; papers of Cadwalader Evans, 1735, and Joseph Rose, 1737; and an account book. The correspondence of General Thomas Cadwalader is broad in scope and embraces letters of many prominent persons. It is rich in family letters and contains material on the Port Folio, the Assembly, clubs, etc. Included are letter books, 1812-1840. His military papers relate mainly to the War of 1812, covering the services of Philadelphia troops, August to December, 1814. In 1817 he took over the management of the Penn family affairs in America. Material collected by earlier agents was placed in his hands. This included many of William Penn's own files on the lower counties, as well as manuscripts collected later to substantiate Penn's claims. Many of the Penn family's original deeds relating to their interests in Pennsylvania are included here, as well as agreements for the Mason-Dixon surveys. The coverage of the Penn agency is very broad. Included in it is voluminous correspondence of the Penns starting with Thomas Penn. Many drafts, surveys, and maps are in the collection. Another large category of General Thomas Cadwalader's papers reflects his career as a lawyer. Richest of all the material preserved here are the George Croghan papers, 1744-1782. These papers deal with Croghan's life as Indian trader, Indian agent, and land speculator. They include a number of his journals, and letters from Sir William Johnson, the Franklins, Gates, Gage, Monckton, Trent, the Whartons, Lord Dunmore and many soldiers and traders of the frontier. Many other cases dealing with the affairs of prominent persons and concerns of General Cadwalader's times are included, notably those concerning the American Iron Company and the West Jersey Society. Judge John Cadwalader's papers relate principally to the law cases he handled prior to his elevation to the bench. In addition, there is material of interest relating to President Buchanan. Present also are Judge Cadwalder's letter books, 1830-1859. Phineas Bond, the British Consul, is represented by papers, much of biographical interest, revolutionary material primarily relating to the affairs of Judge William Moore of Moore Hall, as well as many law cases. Bond represented English concerns having interests in this country. Many of these cases he passed on to his nephew, General Thomas Cadwalader. General George Cadwalader's papers furnish information on military subjects, 1834-1865, are rich in militia affairs, include information on the "Awful Riots of 1844," day-by-day coverage of the Mexican War, and much excellent Civil War material. His interests as a sportsman in yachting and duck shooting are well represented, as are his extensive farming and cattle-raising activities in Maryland. Business interests include papers relating to the Baltimore and Philadelphia Steamboat Company, 1840-1878; estate papers, many inherited from his father, General Thomas Cadwalader; and railroad and mining interests. Dr. Charles E. Cadwalader's papers consist principally of extensive historical and genealogical notes on the Cadwalader and allied families, as well as photographs of family portraits, relatives, and family houses. Among certain miscellaneous items not included in the above items are account books of John Moore, 1710-1717; John Kearsley, 1711-1720; John Cadwalader, 1711-1724; Patient Usher, 1737-1741; Dr. Phineas Bond, 1758-1759, 1762-1769; and Dr. Thomas Cadwalader, 1767-1768.

Johnson, Warren, b. 1732. Journal of Warren Johnson: manuscript, 1760-1783.
Title:
Journal of Warren Johnson: manuscript, 1760-1783.
This item consists chiefly of a diary kept by Warren Johnson while sojourning with his brother, Sir William Johnson, at Fort Johnson, New York from June 29, 1760-July 3, 1761. Although day-to-day activities and experiences are chronicled in the diary, much of the information appears to be in a reminiscent mood. However, the factual as well as anecdotal information written down provides a vivid picture of the social life and customs as well as the economic conditions of the British colonies in North America during the time of the French and Indian War. In particular, he details the customs of the native peoples, European settlers in the Mohawk Valley, the Dutch in Albany, French in Quebec, and New Englanders. The price and availability of goods and services are frequently mentioned, particularly in contrast between the American colonies and Great Britain. His brother's work among the native peoples and his command militia troops during the war is described in detail, too, as is everyday life at Fort Johnson. Information was later added to this volume relative the genealogy of the Johnson family.

Reporting on activities at his post in Detroit: Indians at Detroit are quiet, although the provinces are as dilatory as usual in their Indian policies; the Wyandots complain of French encroachment on their lands; Captain Brown has four Senecas (at Niagara) as prisoners; believes killing them would have been preferable, as there will be difficulties in trying them. Alexander, William, 1726-1783. Selected papers, 1767-1782. 1776-1782 (bulk).
Title:
Selected papers, 1767-1782. 1776-1782 (bulk).
These selected papers of William Alexander, spanning the years 1767 to 1782 (with a gap between late December 1779 to June 1781), consist of correspondence sent and received, military orders and reports, and bulletins to the Continental Congress. The earliest documents relate Lord Stirling's early commercial dealings, but the bulk of the papers chronicle his activities during the American Revolution. Alexander's baptism by fire emerges from the records of numerous campaigns and conflicts; the Battles of Long Island and Trenton in 1776, and of Brandywine the following year are well documented. Also covered in the Alexander Papers are civil and military affairs in New Jersey; military intelligence and troop movements in New Jersey and the Hudson Highlands; communication with enemy forces; and various matters of army administration. Alexander's frontier command is particularly well documented. Notable correspondents include the most of the military and political leaders of the new state and national governments, as well as prominent merchants in New York and New Jersey. Exemplifying the caliber of the material is a report dated June 12, 1781, from General Washington to a board of general officers at New Windsor. In this signed document, Washington outlines plans for a Franco-American assault on New York and requests advice on seven specific points from his officer corps. Items have each been inlaid into two folio volumes. The papers are extensively described in Sotheby's catalog "The Library of H. Bradley Martin, Highly Important Printed and Manuscript Americana: Auction Wednesday, January 31, 1990" (Lots 2506-2553) and are available to researchers on microfilm. Additional manuscripts relating to William Alexander can be found in the extensive Alexander Papers and the Rutherfurd Papers as well as in other gatherings of William Alexander's own correspondence, in The New-York Historical Society Manuscripts Department.

Guy Johnson papers, 1773-1831
Title:
Guy Johnson papers 1773-1831
Correspondence, journals, documents, and maps by or about Guy Johnson. The early correspondence (1773-1774) includes letters from and to Guy's uncle William Johnson, and concern his illness and desire for Guy Johnson to succeed him as Indian Affairs Superintendant. William's correspondents include the Earl of Dartmouth, Secretary of State for the Colonies, and General Thomas Gage. Letters from 1775 concern the loyalty of the Six Nations to the British, and includes an intercepted letter from Ethan Allen, written after his advance on Canada. Guy's correspondents include the Earl of Dartmouth, Daniel Claus, Peter Van Brugh Livingston, and Allan Maclean. Two journals kept by Guy Johnson date from 1775-1776, and 1781. The first journal records his visit to London and return to America on July 29, 1776, and includes an account of Howe's operations on Long Island and the capture of Fort Washington by General Knyphausen. The second journal contains daily reports of Indian raids, news and messages received, and information from prisoners. There are a number of references to Joseph Brant. Johnson's memorandum and account book is dated 1776-1782 and contains his official accounts. Penned at the back are extensive notes about Indian movements. The other journal, written by an unidentified officer posted at Kadaragoras, a settlement built for the Senecas, contains reports on enemy movements. The Other Papers contain formal proclamations by the magistrates of Schenectady and Albany, and by the Mohawks, dated May 1775, stating their mutual wishes for neutrality in the war. A manuscript by Colonel John Butler records the proceedings of 18 councils with the Six Nations and the Canadian Indians, from October, 1775 to June 1776. A manuscript plat map drawn by Guy Johnson of the Townships of Gage and Burton in Nova Scotia is undated. The rest of the papers relate to attempts by Johnson's family to obtain compensation for Johnson's expenses during the war.

Title:
Papers, 1766-1871.
A collection of business papers, all of which relate to John Porteous and his Herkimer County lands and his activities as an agent for the Johnson family. Included is correspondence of John Porteous, mostly with James and William Constable, 1778-1799. Other correspondents include Joseph Chew, a close associate of the Johnson family and John Ferguson. This correspondence deals with Porteous' mercantile and land operations as well as his activities in the settlement of Sir William Johnson's estate. Also included are journals of Porteous' stores at Schenectady and Little Falls, 1794-1795; bonds issued by Porteous, 1792-1797; Porteous' will and an inventory of his estate, 1807; two of Porteous' memoranda books; several papers relating to Nova Scotia and property titles there; and several copies of "The London Price Current". A single notebook/diary of Dudley Burwell of Little Falls, dated 1855-1871, appears to be somewhat unrelated to the papers, but it does contain abstracts of several of the Porteous documents found elsewhere in the collection, which seems to indicate that Burwell was also in custody of the papers at one point.

Johnson, William, Sir, 1715-1774. Papers, 1733-1808.
Title:
Papers, 1733-1808.
This collection of Johnson's papers represents a significant number of Johnson's personal and business papers. The collection consists of several thousand individual documents ranging from bills and receipts to correspondence to household inventories. The collection includes materials seized by the State during the American Revolution and other materials acquired subsequently to supplement the collection. Included in this collection are correspondence, bills, accounts, records of public proceedings, official and military reports regarding Johnson as a land developer, records relating to Johnson's activities as a fur trader and his activities as Superintendent of Indian Affairs. Also included are papers relating to trade with the Indians; papers relating to Johnson's activities during the French and Indian War, particularly the Battle of Lake George in 1755; the construction of Johnson's homes, Fort Johnson and Johnson Hall; the erection of public buildings for use by the county seat in Johnstown, N.Y. and other papers reflecting Johnson's role as a prominent figure on the colonial frontier. The collection also contains materials relating to Johnson's activities as a land agent for his uncle Sir Peter Warren. Johnson acted as Warren's agent shortly after his immigration to America and managed Warren's Mohawk Valley lands. The collection was badly damaged in the 1911 New York State Capitol fire. Those documents that survived were published as Johnson Papers (see publications note). A published calendar of the collection was issued prior to the fire and the absence of particular documents is easy to ascertain (see publications note). The State Library holds other papers of Johnson and his family which are cataloged separately.

French and Indian War collection, 1754-1774.
Title:
French and Indian War collection, 1754-1774.
This collection of French and Indian War papers includes papers of several individuals. The Burk collection includes the military correspondence of Major John Burk (1717-1784), with letters to Burk from Governor Shirley, Robert Hale, Ephraim Williams, William Pitt, Timothy Ruggles, John Chandler, and others. The collection of Sir William Johnson's (1715-1774) letters consists primarily of drafts of his correspondence with General Thomas Gage, Benjamin Franklin, and others, dealing with his activities among the tribes of the Six Nations. Robert Hale (1703-1767), a physician who commanded a regiment during the Louisburg Campaign, 1745, kept a chronicle of the major political and military events in America and Europe for the war period. The first volume was begun in July 1755 but some items dating back to 1748 were entered at the start of the volume. There are three volumes, the third ending 30 October 1762. There is also a small folder of Hale correspondence. The 1756 Receipt Book of Sir John St. Clair, Quartermaster, is an account of the men employed and receipts for the money expended in the bateau service, New York. Other accounts have been preserved in a "Book of Ballances 1759," a record of money paid and due to men of several Massachusetts companies. There are two diaries of soldiers. The first is by Lieutenant Cornelius Stowell (1724-1804) of Worcester who was stationed at Crown Point, N.Y., 1759. This volume includes regimental orders for the 1st Battalion of Brigadier General Timothy Ruggles' regiment. The second diary is composed of two separate accounts: the first part was written while the soldier was stationed at Fort William Henry, N.Y., 1758, and the second, written by the same soldier, describes an expedition to Louisburg, 1759. The volume includes scattered orders for 1760 and ends with the announcement of 24 September of the surrender of Montreal to General Amherst. The rest of the collection is composed of an assortment of returns, rolls, lists, bills and receipts, documents, commissions and enlistments, and a memorandum book for 1755-1761. Included in the miscellaneous documents is a series of four letters and one undated letter fragment addressed to Michael Martyn who participated in the 1759 campaign against Louisburg. Three of the letters and the fragment were written in 1759 by Benjamin Kneeland from Boston to Martyn in Louisburg. These letters mention other military campaigns, as does a 1762 letter from Rush Salter to Martyn.

Rogers, Robert, 1731-1795. Journal, 1766-1767.
Title:
Journal, 1766-1767.
Rogers' Michillimackinac Journal, 1766-1767, is divided into two sections: one records his transactions with the Indians which led to charges of treason and dishonesty by Sir William Johnson (1715-1774), superintendent of Indian Affairs, whom Rogers frequently mentions in the journal; the other section contains his report to the Board of Trade (apparently never presented) calling for a combined military and civil government for Michillimackinac with himself as governor. The first section includes comments on Rogers' visits to Indian tribes and speeches delivered, periodic councils of Indians held at Fort Michillimackinac (the largest gathering of North American Indians ever recorded up to that time), the poor conditions of the various Algonquin tribes, and the fierce competiton between the English and French for the Indian trade. The narrative contains graphic portrayals of the deceit so characteristic of the Indian trade and the supplies, including rum, which Rogers frequently doled out to Indians in order to control them and win their trade.
