At the council of Alexandria, 14 Apr. 1755, Johnson was created a major-general and appointed cammander-in-chief of the provicial forces for the expedition against Crown Point in the French and Indian War. On 8 Sept. 1755, Johnson and his forces defeated the French troops under the command of Baron Dieskau at the Battle of Lake George (N.Y.), thereby saving the New York Colony from French invasion.
