Journal of Warren Johnson: manuscript, 1760-1783.

This item consists chiefly of a diary kept by Warren Johnson while sojourning with his brother, Sir William Johnson, at Fort Johnson, New York from June 29, 1760-July 3, 1761. Although day-to-day activities and experiences are chronicled in the diary, much of the information appears to be in a reminiscent mood. However, the factual as well as anecdotal information written down provides a vivid picture of the social life and customs as well as the economic conditions of the British colonies in North America during the time of the French and Indian War. In particular, he details the customs of the native peoples, European settlers in the Mohawk Valley, the Dutch in Albany, French in Quebec, and New Englanders. The price and availability of goods and services are frequently mentioned, particularly in contrast between the American colonies and Great Britain. His brother's work among the native peoples and his command militia troops during the war is described in detail, too, as is everyday life at Fort Johnson. Information was later added to this volume relative the genealogy of the Johnson family.
