In 1756 James Abercromby was appointed second in command to John Campbell, 4th Earl of Loudoun, commander-in-chief of British forces in America and, following Loudoun's recall, assumed his position. His failure to capture Fort Ticonderoga led to his replacement in 1759 by Jeffery Amherst.
