Fonda family.
In the 18th century Jelles Fonda settled in the Mohawk Valley in what is now Fonda, N.Y. He acquired a considerable amount of land in the valley and operated a general store. During the French and Indian War he served as an officer in the local militia under Sir William Johnson. Fonda later served as a Colonel in the Tryon County militia during the American Revolution.
