A native of Pennsylvania who engaged in the Indian trade, and in 1772 was deputy agent of Indian Affairs at Fort Pitt. As a British sympathizer, he came to Detroit in 1778 with Simon Girty and Matthew Elliot, and was appointed captain in the British Indian Department and later Superintendent. Dr. John Connoly was born in Pennsylvania in 1743. He trained as a doctor and moved to the American frontier in 1762. He came to Pittsburgh in 1774, where he sided with Virginia during the boundary dispute between that province and Pennsylvania.
