Physician Joseph Carson taught medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. The College of Philadelphia's Medical School, founded in 1765, became known as the University of Pennsylvania, Dept. of Medicine In 1779.
Peter Collinson (1694–1768) was an English merchant and botanist. He was a partner in his father’s London trading business, and he remained a merchant throughout his life. However, at a young age, he also developed a passion for botany. He eventually wrote numerous essays on natural history topics for the Gentleman’s Magazine, and he contributed many reports to the Society of Antiquaries and to the Royal Society, of which he was a member. His extensive network of correspondents in Europe and North America placed Collinson at the nexus of the community of eighteenth century European and American natural scientists.
Peter Collinson was born in London, the son of the Quaker and London cloth merchant Peter Collinson and his wife Elizabeth Hall. Young Peter’s love of plants apparently stemmed from a garden owned by relatives with whom he lived as a boy and which he later inherited. However, Collinson is known less for his own original contributions to natural science than for his tireless support of the work of others. His publications and affiliation with the Royal Society brought him in contact with many eminent European naturalists and scientists of his day, including Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753), Stephen Hales (1677-1761), and J. J. Dillenius (1684-1747). He also knew the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778, APS 1769), who named horse balm ( Collinsonia canadensis ) after him. Collinson was always supportive of the work of ordinary gardeners and plantsmen, such as Philip Miller (1691-1771), the gardener of the Chelsea Physic Garden, and the nurseryman James Gordon, who helped maintain the extensive gardens of Lord Petre, Collinson’s close friend and patron of scientific endeavors.
Collinson’s numerous contacts with fellow botanists placed him at the center of a large network of mid-eighteenth century European and American naturalists. It was through his family’s extensive trade in the cloth business with North America that he got to know a number of Americans. They included Alexander Garden (1730-1791, APS 1768), Cadwallader Colden (1688-1776, APS 1768), Benjamin Franklin and John Bartram (1699-1777, APS 1768).
Collinson and Bartram were particularly close friends. In the early 1730s, Bartram wrote to Collinson soliciting the post of king’s botanist in North America. While Collinson was not able to secure the position for another three decades, the two men arranged for Bartram to send seeds and seedlings to British subscribers. This group eventually numbered more than sixty men and included some of the most prominent botanists and landscape designers in Britain. Moreover, beginning in 1733, the two men engaged in a lively exchange of ideas and specimen that lasted until Collinson’s death in 1768. Collinson communicated many of Bartram’s studies to the Royal Society, which published Bartrams observations in the Philosophical Transactions . The naturalist John Fothergill (1712-1780, APS 1770) one of Collinson’s close friends, wrote that the “eminent naturalist, John Bartram, may almost be said to have been created such by my friend’s assistance.” John Bartram’s son William acknowledged Collinson’s crucial role in his father’s career, noting that “it was principally through the interest of Collinson that he [John Bartram] became acquainted, and entered into correspondence with, many of the most celebrated literary characters in Europe, and was elected a member of the Royal Society of London, of Stockholm, etc.” Collinson, who maintained his own extensive garden, introduced several American plants into Britain, including the American alder, three species of azalea, black birch, hemlock, sugar maple, mountain laurel, and many medicinal herbs.
Collinson and Franklin also maintained a long friendship marked by an active correspondence. Their shared interests included the discovery of mastodon bones in North America and, more famously, topics related to electricity. In fact, it was Collinson who introduced Franklin’s ideas on electricity to the Royal Society; the Society not only published them but also recognized Franklin’s work with the Copley medal in 1753. Franklin admired Collinson’s qualities as a scientist and as a man. He wrote that “if we may estimate the goodness of a man by his disposition to do good, and his constant endeavors and success in doing it, I can hardly conceive that a better man has ever existed.”
Collinson’s interests in North American matters also included the promotion of crop experiments in the colonies. In addition, he was an early patron of the American Philosophical Society, though not a member, and for many years served as purchasing agent for the Library Company of Philadelphia.
In 1724 Peter Collinson married Mary Russell. They had two children.

Rutherfurd family. Rutherfurd family papers, 1721-1879.
Title:
Rutherfurd family papers, 1721-1879.
Papers, 1721-1879 (bulk 1765-1840), consisting of correspondence, legal papers, deeds and land patents, record and account books, and miscellaneous papers. The material concerns members of the Rutherfurd, Alexander, and Reid families, who were related by marriage; the largest groups of material relate to James Alexander, William Alexander (Lord Stirling), Walter Rutherfurd, and John Rutherfurd. There are also papers of mary Rutherfurd, in her capacity as executrix of John Rutherfurd's will. Much of the material has to do with the families' land holdings; members of all three families held shares in the Propriety of the Eastern Division of New Jersey, and in the Second Nine Partners Tract in New York. It includes surveys (including a volume of surveys of the Ramapo Tract in New Jersey dated 1767), rent rolls, memoranda about farms and tracts, legal papers, conveyances, and receipts (many for rents), as well as correspondence. There is a large group of letters relating to General John Reid's attempts to retain ownership of his American properties, which were under threat of confiscation because of his service in the British Army during the Revolution, including some from his daughter, Susanna Robertson; there is also material related to the settlement of his estate. There is another large group of letters from Judge Robert Morris, of New Jersey, and numerous letters from William Wilson of Clermont, which deal with Rutherfurd tenants in Little Nine Partners. Other people who wrote letters to members of the families include Cadwallader Colden, Lewis Morris, Robert Hunter Morris, and Thomas Penn. There is some material relating to the French and Indian War: Walter Rutherfurd's accounts for the 4th Battalion, 60th Royal American Regiment, and a list of provisions for the Niagara Expedition, probably created for William Alexander ca. 1759. Other papers include the will, dated July 28, 1715, of Governor Robert Hunter.

Maass, Richard, 1919-1998,. The Richard Maass collection of Westchester and New York State, 1645-1910 (bulk 1770-1783).
Title:
The Richard Maass collection of Westchester and New York State, 1645-1910 (bulk 1770-1783).
Collection consists of over three hundred autograph letters, documents, and newspapers which chronicle the early history of New York State from its colonization by the Dutch to the mid-nineteenth century. The collection is, however, particularly rich in materials relating to the Revolutionary War and can provide researchers with multiple perspectives on significant events and individual military campaigns. For example, the Battle of White Plains is amply documented in the collection through correspondence from participants and observers, as well as in contemporary newspaper accounts. The arrangement of the collection, for the most part, has followed Maass's own organization. With a few exceptions, each item has been listed and described individually in the finding aid. Any additional information that has been provided by Maass regarding a specific document has been retained and placed in a folder which has been filed immediately behind the folder containing the document to which it relates. Almost every folder for each item in the collection contained a one to two page description of the document, as well as other ancillary materials such as transcriptions and/or translations of documents by Maass. These folders also occasionally contained provenance information. Any additions to the collection are to be processed as separate accretions. In addition to autograph letters and historical documents, the Maass Collection contained a small amount of printed materials. These chiefly consisted of over thirty different early American, British, and French newspapers, dating mainly from the eighteenth century, which have been organized as a separate series (Series V).

George Bancroft collection
George Bancroft (1800-1891) was an American historian, diplomat and public official who wrote the ten-volume History of the United States. Bancroft's positions included Collector of the Port of Boston, Secretary of the Navy under Polk, Minister to Great Britain from 1846 to 1849, and Minister to Germany from 1867 to 1874. In addition to History of the United States, Bancroft wrote other historical studies and biographies. Collection consists of transcripts (and some originals) of letters, dispatches, statistical data, journals, minutes of proceedings, and other papers culled from American, British and European sources by George Bancroft in the course of research for his historical works. Bulk of the collection reflects the economic, political, military, and diplomatic relations between Great Britain and its North American colonies during the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly the period leading up to the American Revolution of 1775-1783, the war itself, and the immediate aftermath of the war culminating in the writing and adoption of the U.S. Constitution. There are materials on the presidencies of George Washington and James K. Polk, and the 1872 dispute between Great Britain and U.S. over the water boundary between the U.S. and British Columbia. Also, records dealing with relations in the 18th century between the U.S. and continental European countries, and various European countries with each other (especially Prussia, Austria, France, Spain, and Great Britain).

Title:
Papers, 1733-1808.
This collection of Johnson's papers represents a significant number of Johnson's personal and business papers. The collection consists of several thousand individual documents ranging from bills and receipts to correspondence to household inventories. The collection includes materials seized by the State during the American Revolution and other materials acquired subsequently to supplement the collection. Included in this collection are correspondence, bills, accounts, records of public proceedings, official and military reports regarding Johnson as a land developer, records relating to Johnson's activities as a fur trader and his activities as Superintendent of Indian Affairs. Also included are papers relating to trade with the Indians; papers relating to Johnson's activities during the French and Indian War, particularly the Battle of Lake George in 1755; the construction of Johnson's homes, Fort Johnson and Johnson Hall; the erection of public buildings for use by the county seat in Johnstown, N.Y. and other papers reflecting Johnson's role as a prominent figure on the colonial frontier. The collection also contains materials relating to Johnson's activities as a land agent for his uncle Sir Peter Warren. Johnson acted as Warren's agent shortly after his immigration to America and managed Warren's Mohawk Valley lands. The collection was badly damaged in the 1911 New York State Capitol fire. Those documents that survived were published as Johnson Papers (see publications note). A published calendar of the collection was issued prior to the fire and the absence of particular documents is easy to ascertain (see publications note). The State Library holds other papers of Johnson and his family which are cataloged separately.
