Jurist, satesman, and member of Continental Congress, born in New York City. He was the leading advocate of the rights of New York to the New Hampshire grants, and drew up a memorial to the assembly in 1773 in support of the claim of his state to an eastern boundary on the Connecticut river.

James Duane was a New York jurist, statesman, and land developer. He was the son of Anthony Duane, a merchant, and Althea Kettletas, and was born in New York City on February 6, 1733. He was admitted to the bar in 1754 and quickly developed a good reputation for his work. He inherited land in Schenectady County and founded Duanesburgh., encouraging settlers on his property. He served in the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1781, in the New York state senate, as mayor of New York, and as the first federal judge of the New York district. He retired from public life in 1794, settled in Schenectady, and died there in 1797. He was married to Mary Livingston, the daughter of Colonel Robert Livingston of Livingston Manor.
