Compilation, 1666-1893 (bulk 1700-1800) of a number of miscellaneous manuscript collections relating to the early history of Ulster County (N.Y.). It consists mainly of land conveyances and material related to boundary disputes, but there are also other legal documents, maps, military papers, financial papers, and some correspondence. Some court documents include an appeal from Thomas Cumming to the court in Kingston, dated 1779, against a conviction of treason, and an indictment against an unmarried woman for the murder of her child. The collection includes material related to James Alexander, Sir Edmund Andros, Cadwallader Colden, Abraham De Peyster, John De Peyster, Peter Schuyler, William Smith, as well as material related to other members of these families and to the Harrison, Provoost, Beekman, and Van Cortlandt families.

James Alexander was a lawyer in New Jersey and New York during the eighteenth century. Born in Scotland in 1691, Alexander fought in the Rebellion of 1715, which resulted in the exile of the Stuarts from England.
