William Allen White was born at Emporia, Kansas, on February 10, 1868. After attending the University of Kansas, he pursued newspaper work, and in 1895 purchased the Emporia Gazette where his grassroots editorials gained him national prominence. White also wrote widely-published poems, articles, and books, and was influential in state and national politics through the early years of World War II. In May 1940, he co-founded a national political action committee, called the Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies, which lobbied for U.S. aid to Great Britain and America's West European allies in their defense against Adolf Hitler. White died on January 29, 1944 at Emporia.

William Allen White was an editor and writer, known as an influential voice for middle America. Born and raised in Kansas, he spent four years at the University of Kansas but left without taking a degree to continue his work as a journalist. After years as a journalist, he bought his failing hometown newspaper, The Emporia Gazette, and turned it into a success with his business sense and journalistic skill. Influenced by his friend Theodore Roosevelt, White became a nationally-known spokesman for the Republican Party, and was active during both world wars. In his long and productive life, he also wrote non-fiction, novels, and short stories, ran for Governor of Kansas, was a founding editor of The American Magazine and The Book of the Month Club, and, dubbed The Sage of Emporia by H.L. Mencken, an enormous influence on middlebrow values. He won a 1923 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing, and a posthumous Pulitzer in 1947 for his autobiography.
